From 1901 to 1927, Melbourne was the capital of Australia for 26 years. After the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, the capital of Australia was Melbourne. At that time, Melbourne was more prosperous than Sydney. With the growing prosperity of Sydney, Sydney citizens very much hope that Sydney will become the capital of Australia.

The Australian government later decided to build a new city Canberra between Sydney and Melbourne as the new capital. In 1927, Australia moved its capital to Canberra.  Canberra is a newly planned city with a very beautiful design.
