Rawalpindi City(PAKISTAN):
Rawalpindi is the city in Punjab, Pakistan.
It is located in the potwar Plateau, 14 kilometers southwest of Islamabad. It situated 526 meters above sea level.
Rawalpindi has a population of over 1.5
million. The city was built on the site of an ancient village of the Laval
tribe where yoga was practiced.
On December
26, 2019, it ranked 491st on the list of the top 500 global cities in 2019.
After being occupied by the British in 1849, it was valued as a defensive center in northwest India. From 1959 to 1967, during the construction of the new capital, Islamabad, it served as a temporary capital. The whole city is divided into a new city and an old city.
The new city was a camp of the British
colonial army. It is now the residence
of senior government officials and wealthy businessmen. The market is
prosperous and the transportation is convenient.
Industry:
Rawalpindi is a storage center for timber
and livestock, textile, food, chemical, metal, and other industries. It is
an important industrial and commercial area in Pakistan. It is a transportation
hub and the starting point of the passage to Kashmir. There is a
Lahore-Peshawar railway passing through, and there are highways connecting
Afghanistan, Srinagar, and Lahore. It has an airport and is in the Himalayas and
the Ganges Plain. The remains of the British rule can be seen everywhere in the
urban area, which is in sharp contrast with the Raja Basha area full of
oriental style.
There are
Liakat Gardens, Ayub National Park, and 6 colleges of Punjab University in the
city.
The
construction of the new capital Islamabad, 14 kilometers northeast of the city,
connects the two together to form the Islamabad-Rawalpindi metropolitan area.
